Why Should You Want A Website?

For most businesses, websites have become the center piece of their marketing and sales, and for almost every industry, more than half of the businesses in that industry have a website.

Most people nowadays are more inclined to look you up on the Internet than any other way.

There are several reasons for this, including convenience and the fact that websites can tell someone a lot about a business, but the most important reason? It's safe. I can go on a website and look up whatever is on there, with no one the wiser. I don't have to worry about being sold to, I won't get phone calls or emails unless I choose to sign up for them, and I won't feel pressured to go for a complete remodel if all I wanted was a new bathroom. On a website, the buyer is in control. And if there isn't enough information on the website, or if there is no website at all, well, someone else probably has one that tells me enough about them that I can choose to go to them instead.

So having a website is important. In today's world, in-the-know people know that a website is the core marketing piece. Brochures drive people to websites. Radio spots are often hard to remember but if you miss part of it, you can always go to the website. Business cards should always drive people to a website. Why pay for a quarter page ad when a smaller one with your website address can tell people so much more? And if you only have a moment to chat with someone, then they can always learn more on your website. Pamphlets, flyers, TV commercials, signs, newsletters, the list goes on and on.

Because a website is so important, it's also critical to know what to put on it. Sales pitches fall flat here; you're much better off if you focus on the benefits for your audience, giving them the info they need to decide to come to you and letting them make the choice.

The first step? Make sure you know what info you need. Ask yourself what would affect your choices if you were buying something or using someone's service? What would you want to know? If that's not enough, then ask some of your clients. What made them come to you, and what was important to them when they made that decision?

Most important of all? Be real. People can often tell when you're trying to hide something. Being real also helps you convey a message that connects with people. Just listing what you do or trying to convince someone that they should come to you or use your services will almost always fall flat unless they already know you.

Just as important as having a website is making sure that people can find it. Unlike the movie "Field of Dreams", just building a website is no assurance that people will come to it. And while you can add yourself to directories, online phone books, and be listed on association websites, if that's all you're doing you're very likely missing 95% of the people out there looking for you.
